The Importance of Orange
Safety during deer season, or any season, is vital to the sport. By wearing blaze orange while in the woods you are more visible to other hunters. This cuts down on hunting incidents and accidents that can happen in the woods. Hunter’s safety is of the utmost importance; we want all of our fellow hunters to be safe and have fun!
Safety
It is required by the state of Ohio to wear a visible vest, jacket, coat, or orange overalls, while hunting. As cool temperatures set in and hunters are out before sunrise and after the sun goes down you must be visible. Freezing rain, snow, and fog can also affect a person’s ability to see someone while hunting. If you are wearing green camo the chances of another hunter seeing you are slim. Blaze orange will make it nearly impossible for another hunter to not see you or confuse you for a deer.
Deer
Deer are unable to see orange the same way humans do. Deer see orange as a shade of brown or grey and not as a threat as one may think. Deer have poor depth perception. They need to see objects from multiple angles to get a three-dimensional perspective. When hunting, regardless of what you are wearing, it is important that you are located somewhere with a background to hide your silhouette. Your silhouette will give you away way before your blaze orange vest will. Look for areas that will give you cover if you are hunting on the ground, such as large bushes or a pile of brush.
Unexperienced/uneducated hunters’ first instinct when they see movement in the woods is to shoot. Year after year there are hunting accidents that could have been avoided because of various reasons. Some of the reasons you cannot control, but one you can control is your visibility to others by wearing blaze orange.
